Who Makes Mazda?

2020 Mazda CX-3

Odds are that you’ve noticed more than one Mazda automobile rolling down our New Rochelle streets. But have you ever wondered who makes Mazda vehicles? Who owns Mazda? Where are Mazdas made? Where did the Mazda name come from? You have questions. We have answers. Read below to find the answers.

Who Owns Mazda?

So, who owns Mazda? If you were to poll Bronx drivers, a large percentage of them would probably be under the impression that Mazda is owned by Toyota or Nissan. But the Mazda Motor Corporation near Hiroshima, Japan, is the manufacturer who makes Mazda. At one time, Ford owned part of the company, buying a stake in it in 1979 and eventually owning a controlling share by 1995. However, Ford had sold all of its shares in Mazda by 2015 as a way of streamlining its assets.

Where are Mazda Models Made?

That brings us to our second question – where are Mazdas made? The company who makes Mazda centers its operations mostly in Japan. However, about a third of Mazda vehicles are produced in various other plants in other countries. So, the hard-working folks who make Mazda cars can be found all around the world.

Where Did the Mazda Name Come From?

The Mazda Motor Corporation was originally known as “Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd”, a producer of manufacturing machine tools. In 1931, the company manufactured the Mazda-Go auto rickshaw. From that point forward, all vehicles produced by the company carried the Mazda name. However, the company itself did not adopt the name until 1984. The name “Mazda” came from two sources, the first being Ahura Mazda, the Persian god of light and wisdom. The second source would be a derivation from the name of the company’s founder, Jujiro Matsuda (pronounced “mazda” in Japanese).
